Bulawayo National Gallery- ‘Basket Case’

I co-curated an exhibition of basketry from Bulawayo, Binga and Lupane as a follow on from the workshops I ran earlier in the year.

Helsinki Design Week – Exhibition and workshops
8 September – 11 September 2009
Exhibited new work from the ‘Other People’s Rubbish’ range at HDW, and ran a series of workshops at both HDW and Habitare (Finland’s largest interiors trade show).

TNBW, Zimbabwe- Workshops
23 June – 8 July 2009
Ran a series of 2 workshops with The New Basket Workshop in Binga and Bulawayo (in Zimbabwe), trying to pass on some design thinking to 2 groups of women – one very rural, and the other somewhat more urban.

Oprah Winfrey Leadership Academy for Girls - Eco Art Week workshop
15-19 June 2009
A weeklong series of workshops with 700 girls in Henley-on-Klip near Joburg. An amazing experience for everyone involved. Me and my whole team went to the school run by Ms Winfrey and made the learners aware of the potential of plastic waste for art and design.

Laketown Mall, Tokyo- Workshop
I was invited to run 4 workshops for the mall’s eco-week for students as well for as young children. The workshops centred on the work process that had gone into the making of one of my light installations.
The young children were taught how to make key rings and the older students learned how to crease flowers as well as

Installed a series of 18 full colour flowerballs-including 2 of which were the largest we had ever made (1500mm) for the opening of a new eco-mall at Koshigaya city, outside of Tokyo.

Exhibited a new range of lamps including the ‘Bottleformball’ at the design store Habari.

Tokyo Wonder Site, Tokyo- Workshop
I ran a workshop for a group of 20 Japanese locals (from young students to older women) on how to make a bottletopball during a 2-hour period.

Exhibited a broad range of products, such as some small bottletopballs and constructed a full colour flowerball in the exhibition space.

London Design Festival

Exhibited at 2 shows during the festival, ’Trashluxe’ and ‘The New World’ (a British Council initiative).
Trashluxe at Liberty showcased my flowerball lights.
At ‘The New World’ a very comprehensive body of work was shown, it covered the whole range of ‘Other People’s Rubbish and ‘Strength in Numbers’.

The British Council sponsored this exhibition.
Exhibited one of ‘one of everything’. The stand was inspired by street vendors; hence it was full, colourful and bustling.
